Scott Beaulieu was living in a garage not long ago. Now, he and his band, Fuzz Fiction, are finishing up their first record.
“My dad owned this garage in the industrial park. He gave me a small room one summer so it was ideal for making noise.”
“It was kind of like camping.”
Beaulieu began experimenting and recording with Jean-Francois Paulin who was working on his own four track recordings.
“I wanted to make some demos with the stuff he showed me and it started there,” said Beaulieu.
Fuzz Fiction began playing together last October after adding two new members. The four piece is made up of Beaulieu on guitar and vocals, Paulin on guitar and vocals, Alexandre Tremblay on drums and Franz Mecking on bass.
They've released a handful of demos and are finishing their first record-- entirely recorded “in house.”
“We decided to record in my parents’ old house. We had neighbours this time (unlike the garage.) We used different rooms in the house to do different recordings. We used bigger rooms for the drums, things like that,” said Beaulieu.
They plan to have the record finished by mid-May and hope to add some new cities to their touring roster.
“We have been to Fredericton, Saint John and we are going to Sussex in June. We are going to get maybe the Quebec way after,” said Paulin. Fuzz Fiction just finished playing the second Par Nous, Pour Nous festival in Moncton with Les Travleux, Space Rocks and Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Cy and Eastcoast Love Story.
Though some liken their sound to drone metal, garage and psychedelic rock, the two say their influences vary.
“I always thought he (Beaulieu,) was a massive Pink Floyd fan and I was a massive Zeppelin fan,” said Paulin.
But Fuzz Fiction draws inspiration from local groups more than anything.
“Like, Les Hotesses D’Hilaire... has an influence musically, but also their mentality,” said Paulin. “I think of Force Fields from Fredericton too.”
“We are really into 80s synth sometimes. As the material has developed we have put more and more weird stuff on it.” Bandcamp: http://fuzzfiction.bandcamp.com/
